Katelyn Cardoza, Spirit Publicity Coordinator 2019-2020
The Initial Letter
Dear Katelyn,
You are now a sophomore! After this year you only have two more years of school, yikes. Honestly, being a sophomore made me scared. I am taking harder classes, trying new sports, getting more involved, and trying to start a new club for Ripon High. Coming into this school year I was worried I wouldn't make so many friends, people would be rude to me or I wouldn't do so well in one of my classes. Thinking about this caused me to think more positively rather than negative. So I am excited for the classes that I am in and the new position that I will work so hard on as Spirit Publicity Coordinator--a total challenge for myself--and getting to try new things this year. I am proud of myself for going to all the water polo practices but I am worried that I will get hurt. I am being open to change. Core Camp was something that made an impact on me too. It led me to try harder in my position and to be the best I can be. I want to be a great leader for the school; later on in the real world I will be qualified to get a job and be an inspiration to the world. Core Camp also helped me have the emotion of happiness to get close with my leadership family, and positive feelings to do good for others. This year I will try and get all my work done with all my best effort. At the same time I will make time for myself and include others. I will show all my pride and spirit towards others and toward the school, and I know I am going to be involved and be a happy and positive person. I hope you will stay strong while you go through sports and meeting new people in everything you do. I support you for trying new things, and when you go throughout everything during school I know you will keep your high standards. In this letter I want to challenge you to be always be yourself, make time to not be stressed, and to be welcoming to others. In this program I will work to love others, be professional, and learn about the leadership world and rules. Good luck with high school!

Part 1: Favorite Quotes
“Too much in life depends on our attitude” by Thomas S. Monson
His quote is inspiring to me due to our behaviors. We control how our lives go by the decisions that we make through the day until through our lives. We get to pick who we want to be, what we want to be and choose our attitudes. I do so many things in my life, and it is my choice. I pick what I want to do and react. Positive acts is equal to a positive life. The man who gave this quote died recently but was an inspiration to me and toward my church. I love him so much.
“If you are on the right path, it will be uphill” by Henry B. Eyring
This saying shows (reminds me of) a big part of leadership. We take separate harder paths to lift others up. We choose to take a longer and difficult paths to get a wealthier more advanced future. Also the right and harder things we accomplish, take impact in how hard we try and what the right thing we do. Put others in front of you. It connects with me because I try to lead others on. I try to do nice things for people and keep my standards. I always wear a ring that says “CTR” which means choose the right. So i have a reminder to be the right person and to do the right thing.
“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” By Jack London
When reading this I got a connection. The quote over all means to not be afraid. So don’t sit around trying to be safe and life longer rather than doing amazing things but risking your life. Living our lives to the fullest is very important to me. Everyday I make many decisions in my life and most of them are out of the house. I like athletic or dangerous things. It makes life more fun and has me enjoy many more things. You don't want to live your life on a couch doing nothing.
“Those who move forward with a happy spirit will find that things always work out” By Gordon B. Hinckley
When I hear this quote it makes me think to be the positive thing in others' lives and my own. If we worry about everything bad in the world we would thing “what can we do” rather than” What can we do”. So this quote reminds us that during the hardest trials, we have to think about the good things in our lives. I try to keep a positive attitude at all times but it is hard. I need to work on this as well. Going the harder route for a better ending.

Part II: Favorite Quotes
“Success isn't just about what you accomplish in your life, it’s about what you inspire others to do”
As a class we don’t get recognized a lot for the things we do. Large dances, rallies, big events, etc. But the coolest thing to see is the smiles on others' faces, how much they go out, and how loud they can be. As a leadership leader, this quote made me think over my life. We can do something even small but others can look at it different and make it even bigger. I hear “we are leaders because we are leading the followers to become future leaders” a lot.
This quote represents me as a leader because I have had many opportunities to inspire others. I went on a bike trip from Canada to Mexico, raised over $20,000, and one of the coolest things I got to see is the people who traveled from their home to anywhere where I was riding my bike to see me. I had a father and daughter meet me at breakfast and the dad was a teacher. He told me how he had his whole class track my trip and what I would do. But what Hit me the hardest was that they, as a class, were raising money for the same fund, and they rode their bikes a little bit everyday. This was one of my biggest accomplishments but it was another by hearing and seeing people how had gotten inspired and making an effort.
This quote can make the biggest impact in the future because I can look back, not at myself, but the others around me and reflect on them. But in the future we will try to accomplish even more and as we are growing we are sprouting more seeds and causing others to grow.
Part 1: Goals
|
Leadership Goals I have many goals that I learned from Core Camp but I would like to share two that are important to me that relate to leadership. The first one is to have better time management. Time is usually something that I never have so I would like to fix that throughout the year. Sports usually get in the way but I am trying to separate my sports life from leadership because leadership is way more important. Having better time management can also cause me to be able to help with our class more and to be less stressed. The second goal that I was to be able to do for the leadership class is being more involved. I am involved with the school by handing out candy for spirit counts but I am never in our classroom. So I want to learn leadership skills, and what they do in class, and focus on Brene Brown. Part of my second goal is to read Dare To Lead and learn/ study, understand about everything Short term goals I also have two short term goals for my life that have to go throughout the school year. Every season I do a sport, which this year, I played the 2 toughest sports. My short term goal is to do well in all my sports, put in all my effort during them, and try to make it to state again this year. To accomplish this I would have to try super hard, by myself, time manage, use heart and mind, and learn from my mistakes. Sports i really hard but it's something that you don't quit. The other short term goal for this year is to keep good grades in all of my classes. This year I am taking honors so it is difficult for me. Each assignment is worth a big part of my grade so if brings stress upon. But I will be able to do this by standing strong, asking questions, learning from mistakes, positive attitude, etc. These short term goals could change our long term goals real fast so they are important to us individually. Long Term Goals Lastly long term goals. These are important because they will affect the future in some type of fashion. My first long term goal was created for my passion for wrestling. My long term goal is to get a scholarship for women's wrestling, and wrestle in college. It's a mean sport but so much fun. I have already talked to colleges to try to get this goal accomplished and now i have to wrestle, work hard, practice, and give everything my all. The second Long term goal is a Mission for me. A woman's mission is a year and a half long in anywhere in the world. My sister is serving a mission right now in brazil which inspired me to want to serve a mission. A mission is something that ,we as children of our Heavenly Father, when we were young. We prepare by reading our scriptures, Saying our prayers, Keeping the commandments, etc. This is a very important thing for me and something I am passionate about. |
Part II: Goals
Reflect Leadership Goals:
I wanted to do better on time management but I still seem to struggle on it. I do whatever I need to do on the last day, but what I have done better is doing it earlier rather than later so then I am not awake until 3 in the morning. But doing this I have gotten less stress which is great for me. Also sports have gotten in the way a couple times but I made sure to go to the leadership events instead of practice unless I was at state because I couldn’t miss that. Next is spirit counts which I did through all the events so I also wanted to focus on Brene Brown because I wasn’t in the class much. I learned a lot just how to lead but that it is okay to focus on ourselves and how to help others in times of need. It is a really great book.
Reflect Short Term Goals:
So my short term goal was to do well in my 3 sports I would be doing. Water polo, wrestling, and track. Water polo, I was the newest person on the team and probably the worst. I tried super hard tho and I got better than how I started. For wrestling I made it to state again! So I am very happy with myself. Last year I got top 32 in the state but this year I got top 16, so hopefully next year I am better. I believed in myself and I loved what I did. I had a want to win. My grades, I struggled in a class or two but I got my grades up again. I don't have school for a month because of being quarantined so I can’t change anything. But They still stress me.
Reflect Long Term Goals:
I can’t really change my long term goals but I know my future has changed. I know that I will get a scholarship in wrestling but that wanting in the beginning of the year has changed now. My coaches have not been helping me in wrestling how they should. Also they yell at me if I'm doing something wrong rather than telling me I'm going great or helping me with my mistake. They also expect me to not live my life and just do wrestling so it's harsh to want to wrestle with so much stress. I still want to go on a church mission. I have studied the ways of my religion and grew a love towards my church and my Heavenly Father. I want to serve my lord because I am a child of god and this is my goal and my future. It will also teach me life skills and help me grow into the person I am meant to be.

Role model
If I could pick a role model I would pick my dad. I would pick my dad because he is the person I want to be like when I am older. He is the person that I am afraid of disappointing the most. He isn’t just my dad but also my best friend. He supports me in everything that I do and will never hate me for something I do. He is so kind, loving, and christlike. He also gives the best advice. Even though it causes me to feel made about myself, sad, selfish, I learn to do the right thing or to fix my problems. He has never missed one of my wrestling tournaments and puts in the effort to know everyone's names and weights on the team. It makes me laugh but the effort he puts in goes a long way for me. I am so grateful for him and love him so much. He is my favorite person to talk to and causes me to never give up. Because of him, I am not a quitter. Nothing is better for me than a roadtrip with my dad. My dad is a total daredevil, I get it from him which I love. My dad is the type of person that everyone is intimidated by him when they first meet him, but when you actually get to know him he isn’t scary, he is actually very enjoyable to be around. He makes jokes, tries to get involved, and makes myself and others laugh. What I really admire about him is his ability for him to talk to strangers and being comfortable in uncomfortable situations. He can talk in multiple languages and can figure out things very quickly. He is a very intelligent man. I want to be him when I grow up. I want to have the same relationship that he has with me with my own kids. He is a leader to me, he takes care of us and puts a lot of people before himself. He is such an amazing dad. And whenever I need help with homework or confused about something he is the first person I call. He just cares about me so much to help. He causes me to want to travel the world and create my own story. His story that he tells me inspires me to do amazing things. He tells me that his joy comes from him watching us (his kids) do amazing things. I try to bring him as much joy as I can. It makes me happy to see him happy. I would be so lucky to live a life like him. If everyone knew him, I think he would inspire many in the world rather than just the people who surround him.
Inner animal
If I could describe myself as an animal (inner animal) I would choose a cow. Why you may ask? This animal is very unique. They provide the best Milk and cheese ever. They also have the best meat. But how does this relate to me? Like cows who taste good inside, my personality is sweet like Milk, but hard and rich like cheese, and strong and tough like meat. Cows are also very adorable, I find myself to be the same at times. They are also very different from any other animal because they all have different colors, patterns, and faces. There are not any they have the same pattern. For me, I look different from anyone else, try different things, and create my own path. And like cows, I can be lazy and sit around eating. But there is nothing better than seeing a cow try to run with its cubby body. Im not chubby but I do look funny when I do dumb stuff. Cows also have long tongues and stick it out a lot, when I am distracted I am known to have my tongue out too. And for those reasons, that is why I think a cow would best be my inner animal.
Part I: The Best Things About Me
Part II: The Best Things About Me
For me this song represents me because I am always on an adventure. It is always hard leaving things behind for me and like Moana she is leaving her island. Moana also share a lot, we are tan, caring, fearless, and could do anything. This song gives me hope and shows that I could do anything I Try. I know that nothing is impossible, just as this song describes. A line says “I can lead with pride, I can make us strong” which connects y me being a good example toward others and keeping my standards close and strong to me.

How Far Ill Go:
I've been staring at the edge of the water 'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why I wish I could be the perfect daughter But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try Every turn I take, every trail I track Every path I make, every road leads back To the place I know where I can not go, where I long to be See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me And no one knows how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go I know everybody on this island, seems so happy on this island Everything is by design I know everybody on this island has a role on this island So maybe I can roll with mine I can lead with pride, I can make us strong I'll be satisfied if I play along But the voice inside sings a different song What is wrong with me? See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blinding But no one knows how deep it goes And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me And let me know what's beyond that line, will I cross that line? The line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me And no one knows how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know how far I'll go |
Part I: Homecoming Activities
Part II: Homecoming Activities Continued
Part I: What I like best about being a member of part of leadership
I have many events during leadership that I have loved. In the beginning I can say that my favorite thing was learning the Sophomore Night Rally Dance and decorating the Homecoming Float. I got to get closer to my Leadership class officers and got to learn the skills in our group. I also got to see how involved our class was and what we could all together and what we could create. We ended up getting first in our dance and had to perform it in front of the WHOLE school. It was a neat experience. The Sophomore class stepped up this year. Homecoming was very intense because there is so much to do but all the events and rallies we get ready make everything so much better and being in leadership helped the process of it and more fun.
Just recently we had Winterfest and decorating the shopping cart was so much fun. I got to create posters with the class officers. We all got to talk about our problems and school. Leadership has caused me to make new friends and to bond with others. I feel comfortable with the class and trusting my classmates has caused me less stress which is nice. We also got to all work on the shopping cart and build off of our Ideas which was fun. We created something amazing and took time out of our day to represent our class which is a big deal.
Lastly, Spirit days. I am the Spirit Publicity Coordinator and I get to count spirit around the school. I love dressing up and getting to see what the students of Ripon High come up with to wear on spirit days. I enjoy getting to meet new students and doing my job. Caryassa and I have gotten closer and both have similar work ethics. Even though kids beg me for candy, it is still nice to see them and show spirit. Also seeing everyone wear the Pride Tribe shirts put a smile on my face.

Reflection of a peer
I would like to Praise Niki. She is one of the kindest, happiest, loyal, hardworking, etc. people that I have ever met. She is the person that everyone wants to be around because she is so inclusive and loving. I would be having a bad day but she is the one to come to me and give me a hug and tell me that everything will be okay. She is like an older sister to me. I strive to be like her. I know a lot of people probably picked Niki for this assignment but to me she stands as a leader. She deserves the position as “President”! She is the one to go out of her way to make everything perfect. She has so much knowledge and great ideas that it amazes me. She needs to be more recognized.
I did track with her last year, we were in a group called the “Grades” because the members in the group were each from a different grade. She welcomed me into it because I was having a hard time on the track. I was doing a different event than all my other friends but she was pole vaulting with me. Every week we would go out to eat and get closer. So I know her on a personal level and see everything that she does. I love her so much, and I hope we will be best friends in the long future.
I praise her for being a blessing in my life, for teaching me so much about things in highschool. I praise her for being a hardworking loving being. I can’t wait to see what she does in the future, our president, my older sister.

Part I: What I Love To Do
Traveling |
I decided to do 3 things that I truly love to do. I love to travel around the world, wrestle for RHS and off season, and model/be a photographer. These hobbies I have make me happy. Traveling causes me to learn and see things that no one has seen before and to become myself. Letter to parents
Dear Mom and Dad,
You do not understand how lucky I am to have you in my life. And my future family will also be lucky to have the best grandparents. But right now I am a person that has many skills because of what you have taught me. I have learned to be fearless, or to never give up in hard times, to make jokes, how to make friends, being social, loving people, keeping my standards, etc. I am so happy with my life that you have provided me and you have caused happiness upon me. You both are my best friends and love you truly. You probably think that I am getting tired of you because I am a “teenager” but honestly I love you more than anything. I would just rather go on adventures with you or do something hype rather than just sit at home. I grow everyday by the example you show, and when I go up I want to be parents just like you. A lot of kids don’t have the relationship we have which means a lot to me because we are so close and I feel so comfortable around you.
I would also like to thank you for teaching me the gospel. I am so happy that I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because of you and learning, I know from right and wrong. My standards are easier to keep. Everyone my age or younger are struggling with theirs but I am still standing strong. Also by what you have taught, I chose myself to do studies of our church and started to grow my own testimony. Thank you for starting my testimony when I was younger. You both show me how to be christlike and it really stands out for me.
All my hobbies and my wanting to do new things is also inspired by you. I am so grateful for you guys, please realize that. You have done an amazing job on being parents. Only if all the other parents could be as cool and loving as you. You honestly deserve an award. I love you so so so much. Thank you for everything.
Love,
Katelyn

Your True Legacy
Dear the Future student who takes over my position next year,
I already know that Bryan Ochoa will be taking my spot and we are very good friends. I know you will do an amazing job in the position. You are a bubbly person with a smile on your face, I admire the way you are proud and confident in yourself. You will make all the students on the campus happy by the bright light you bring. You truly inspire me to be better and you will do better than I do. I can see this by how much effort you put in all the events. You really affect everyone in the room and are very good with words. You have a way of making people feel better and can make friends easier.
I would like to help you gain knowledge about this position. I have made many mistakes and learned from them so it is my job to help you learn from it. You are new to a position with no one to train you but don't worry. Your job is to grab the candy provided for you in Morty's room and pass it out whenever there is an ASB assigned spirit day. Also every first Thursday of each month for college day. You will be dividing the classrooms with the other fellow peers you have having to do the same thing. You pass out the candy to the people who are spirited. Make sure you follow the rules that Carissa and I have made about the dress code of what “spirit” is or is not. You count each grade individually. After someone incharge of the percent of spirits will add them together and keep track of all the spirit the classes had. Give one candy each because it'll be gone quick, and if they are super needy you don’t have to give it to them. If candy is low then fill out a PO for more candy and Morty will get some at Costco or order it. That's it for spirit counts.
Some other things that you will be incharge of is helping with the classes if needed, creating posters for events. Also “Pride Tribe Shirts”. As everyone knows, we ordered too many this year and are having trouble selling them. You will probably be selling them still until they are all gone. You will have to fill out announcement forms to remind students when selling them. PowWow, you will be selling shirts throughout the whole week… And when you still have them, they will go on to other events like football games and such. You will need to contact GG for the budgets, and cash box. Fill out the form for that and try to sell as many as you can. I had trouble with this because I was handling 3 sports and was very busy. Try to make yourself open.
Lastly is Jamba Juice. This was one of the biggest projects our position is in charge of. I actually couldn’t experience it sadly due to our school being shut down from a worldy virus. But There will be a class that has the most spirit counts at the end of the year. They are rewarded with Jamba juice. You will get PO forms and get approval from Morty and pick it up during school and have them enjoy.
I know you will do well in the upcoming year. The students will truly love you like I do. Please learn from my mistakes and put in lots of effort.

The professional
In leadership, we have learned many skills. Examples are communication, time management, budget forms, and interviews. The two I have picked were public speaking and Thank you cards. These two things help us in the real world when we have to be professional or even in times of need. We learn lots in leadership that help us with small simple skills but also when we need them in the biggest of times. We have a better time speaking to people and more outgoing than shy,
Thank you cards are a simple thing. It is a way to say thank you to someone for an act they have provided. This is a good thing to get used to writing because it will make the other person feel good about doing a good deed. This could also help in the future and they would be more willing to help again and help us succeed. Doing this can also help improve our penmanship and our will to write them. They help us be thankful for the small things and to be more committed to doing more things. We should thank everyone with a thank you card if they have done something helpful for us or even have given us something.
My second thing is Public speaking. In class we were each assigned a topic to use our public speaking skills. My topic was “The happy moments in life.” I learned from public speaking is to see the topic in many different ways, from others point of views. Public speaking also helps us talk to people one on one. It takes fear out of us when speaking and helps us practice if we speak in the future. We practice eye contact rather than looking straight at the paper, length, speaking sound and clear for everyone to hear, and giving good points. We are teaching the class what we know, not what the paper says.

Change
Being in leadership this year was actually a mental struggle for me. Last year I had other peers sharing and helping each other through our trials. This year I had a senior teach me, well he had the same position as me. She was supposed to help me but I think he focused on senior year and having fun came first before leadership and teaching me. I would ask questions but she would leave me in confusion but then blame the situation on me. So the change from this year and last year was that I have more knowledge than last year and was always doing something. I found myself this year looking for things to do and finding help. I helped Block R. The change from the beginning of the year to now was that I was super motivated in the beginning and thought I would work well with my peers. I would text her and ask what we had to do in the future and she would respond with “nothing now” but I wanted to have something to do. The change I was gonna make was to step up and work better with her. I would’ve tried to get all the work done early and make time to meet up, but because of Corona our school shut down. Next year there will be great spirit publicity coordinators so I am really looking forward to seeing how well they do.And they are very motivated so the future class has been well but together. The personal change I will make is to be straight up, because I didn’t do this the whole year and now I regret the lack of work I did and I should’ve done more. I will put more effort in the things I do, and be more committed. If I am given a job in the future, I will give it my all because I failed and I am learning from my mistakes. “Failing forward” was something we learned from core camp and I should've thought about it more. I do fail a lot but we just have to stand up and not do it again. That is what I am doing in this situation, I will do better the next time, everytime. The results of this will add up greatly and I will change how I want to be and for the better.
The Ideal Leader
The Ideal leader to me is not someone who only leads but also the one to lift others up. I am very big about knowing if the leader wants to just take control or to stay back to help the others. Being a leader allows us to gain skills to cooperate with many people and get connected. How do they do this? Not just by leading but by helping and teaching the followers to lead. Taking control of me doesn’t stand out as a leader but more as ruler or dictator. Leader has the word “lead” in it which means to go with one by holding them by the hand. This backs up my point of helping hand by hand.
Being a leader requires a lot of qualities and characteristics. Commited is one that sicks out the most. If you aren’t committed to the situation then there is no point in you being there to lead. Confidence also is a big one. If you go into a situation without being confident, then the people you are leading will also suffer and everything will go down hill. Even if leading requires hard work, communication, honestly, it is well known that a leader should also be caring and kind. It helps their peers grow and lifts them up.
Now their requirement that I think that a leader should always stand out to them as a person as well. A leader should never be late, mostly if it is something that they are planning. They should be one of the first to contribute. They have to disperse and teach work amongst his/her peers. Time management and not procrastinating is a big one as well because almost everyone does it. They also should be the ones willing to take charge and fault through all situations.
Leaders have a lot on their plate, but yes it does make them better. But these points I gave do show what an Ideal leader is. Being a leader is leading, not ruling over his or her peers.
YOU
I am Fearless.
